According to five individuals familiar with the subject, Facebook Inc. has contacted academics and policy professionals to establish a commission to advise the business on worldwide election problems.
In addition to political advertising, the proposed “election commission” would address issues about election-related disinformation.
The commission will be announced this autumn in time for the 2022 US midterm elections. But the study warned that the attempts were preliminary and might fail.
Facebook has thus far refused to comment.
World leaders and politicians that break social media regulations and standards have been a current issue.
Facebook has utilised external bodies to help make choices before, including the planned election commission.
For this purpose, Facebook established the “Oversight Board” in2018. The board consists of former politicians, academics, and policy professionals.
However, the board said in May 2021 that Facebook’s indefinite ban on former US President Donald Trump was incorrect.
