After an 18-month shutdown, Broadway musicals return with ‘Hadestown.’

The Tony-winning musical “Hadestown” returned to Broadway on Thursday, becoming the first musical to reopen after an extraordinary 18-month hiatus.

Ahead of the return of more than a dozen shows later in September, “Hadestown,” which won eight Tony Awards in 2019, was the largest show to return.

The musical “Waitress,” which closed on Broadway weeks before the coronavirus epidemic in March 2020, reopened on Thursday for a limited run with a new cast led by Sara Bareilles.

After the concert on Thursday, the cast and band will have a street party in the heart of Manhattan’s theatrical district.

To keep the coronavirus at bay, audiences must be properly vaccinated and wear masks throughout the performance. Shows can play to capacity.

Hamilton, The Lion King and Wicked are among the major three returning on Sept. 14, with others running through October.
